This article outlines the specific capabilities your home router will need to have to be able to support the Owlet Sock on your home network.
The Owlet Sock was designed to be compatible with any router that supports 2.4 GHz networks. Most routers have this capability, but if you are running into trouble at the registration step of setup then you may need to tweak some of your wireless settings. Your phone and Owlet both need to be using the 2.4 GHz wireless network in order for this step to complete, and it is possible your phone is on the 5.0 GHz network instead.
Why is this important? For two devices to communicate on a wireless network they both need to be on the same channel just like a two-way radio. For two devices to talk directly to each other (which is what's happening during that registration step) they have to be on the exact same channel. If not they will not receive each other's signal and just get static.
If you want to try this on your own here is what you need: an internet browser, the IP address of your router and the username and password to access the router settings that should have been created during setup.
- If you know the IP address of your router open up a web browser and type that address into the URL bar.
- Enter your user name and password when prompted.
- Once you reach the main menu open up the wireless settings for the router.
- Scan the page until you find something with a title like "Wireless Standard" or "Wireless Mode." Often there is a drop down menu next to it that contains options like: 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11b/g, 802.11n. Set your router to one of the following standards: 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11b/g.
- If there is a "Save Settings" or "Apply" button of some kind select it and allow your router some time to reset.
- Restart set-up on your Owlet. If the WiFi indicator light is already lit then proceed directly to the registration step. Once you have completed it (and the rest of set-up) you can open your router settings again and set the router back to the original wireless settings.

*A word about the 802.11 options mentioned above and how this all comes into play. Each of those options is essentially a specific way for your router to broadcast data via a radio frequency. Each setting encodes data in a slightly different way and acts like a separate channel for communicating. If you want a device to communicate with the router it has to be set for the same channel. In order to complete the registration step you need to ensure that your router, phone and Owlet are all encoding data the same way and setting your router to one of the three above options will ensure that happens.
